No theory exam

The BE trailer licence (aanhangwagenrijbewijs): practical only

Caravan, horse trailer, boat trailer: if it weighs more than your B licence allows, you need BE. There is no theory exam for it. You take lessons with a trailer and one practical exam.

Which licence do you need to tow?

  • B: Passenger car; trailer up to 750 kg, or heavier if car and trailer together stay under 3,500 kg.
  • B with code 96: Any trailer as long as car and trailer together weigh at most 4,250 kg.
  • BE: Car with a trailer, caravan or horse trailer up to 3,500 kg.

The route, step by step

  1. 1Hold a B licence. BE is added to it; you cannot start with BE. Minimum age for the exam: 18.
  2. 2Health declaration (Gezondheidsverklaring) via Mijn CBR before the exam — €46.90. CBR
  3. 3Lessons with a trailer. The CBR says lesson prices for the car with trailer differ per school and gives no typical lesson count; ask the school for an estimate. The gemeente fee for the new licence is at most €53.65 in 2026 (€39.65 extra for a rush order). CBR
  4. 4The practical exam — €143.50. 55 minutes in total, about 35 of them driving: an eyesight check, questions on loading and coupling the trailer, then control of car and trailer, priority, overtaking, roundabouts and special manoeuvres. A health declaration must be submitted before the exam. An interpreter may come along. CBR
  5. 5Apply for the new licence at your gemeente — at most €53.65 in 2026.

Not comfortable in Dutch?

There is no theory exam to worry about. At the practical exam an interpreter may come along: a sworn interpreter with a valid tolkenpas, or your instructor with a valid WRM-pas, sits in the back and translates the examiner's words. Your school says so when booking.
